Through the Looking Glass by James Seow

Seow was inspired by snow globes, portraying the balance of nature and construction in an environment whilst exploring the relationship between the interior and exterior, particularly the role of the gaze as an outsider. This piece demonstrates the fragility of the environment within the ‘globe’ and the delicate nature of memory. The snow globe both conjures childhood innocence imagery and represents nostalgia’s materiality.

In Lost Wonders of the Sea, Seow meticulously captures a miniature seascape encapsulated in an aquarium—a micro world that falls under our gaze and control. He illustrates our effort to circumscribe the boundless sea into our domestic life, a powerful but serene, beautiful but dangerous space. After all, it is man’s effort and imagination to contain nature and make it his sanctuary.
