Cultivated Wonder is a body of work inspired by Penjing 盆栽, an ancient Chinese art form dating from at least the 3rd century. Penjing is an extension of the garden, enabling an artist to recreate parts of the natural landscape in miniature by focusing on depicting one or more trees in a container. A living sculpture emerges in a miniature setting through trimming, pruning, and wiring.

Seow presents a classic Western landscape engraving-like composition in an Eastern ceramic bowl in this series. Through digital manipulation of the images to intaglio printing (etching with chin colle), Seow seeks to encapsulate the delicate and ephemeral essence in the spirit of nature. This technique invites the viewer to engage with the artwork, drawing them into an intimate relationship to apprehend what cityscape or wilderness does not readily reveal.
