Art Editions? What is that?

Definition

Art editions refer to limited edition artworks produced by the artist or in collaboration with a master printer using various techniques such as screen printing, giclées, lithographs, engravings, photo-etchings, etc.

Exclusivity

These artworks are often created by renowned artists and are available in limited quantities, enhancing their exclusivity and value.

Authenticity

Each piece is individually signed and numbered by the artist, guaranteeing its authenticity.

Affordability

Art editions provide collectors and art lovers with the opportunity to acquire high-quality artworks at a more affordable price.

Enhanced Value

Some art editions are embellished with handmade details and released as multiple variants, increasing their collectible value.

Investment Potential

Art editions are valuable not only for their beauty but also as potential investment objects. When buying art editions, it’s important to consider the artwork’s condition, the authenticity of the signature, the artist’s reputation, the printmaker and the presence of a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

Accessibility

Art editions offer an accessible and engaging way to collect and appreciate art.

Price Factors

The price of an art edition is influenced by the edition size, the artist, and several factors:

  • Artist’s Reputation: The artist’s fame and market position affect the price. Established artists can command higher prices even with larger editions.
  • Availability: When an edition sells out, most works are in private collections, increasing secondary market demand and prices.
  • Artistic Value and Quality: The quality and artistic value of the prints, using high-grade materials and techniques, can justify higher prices.
  • Investment and Collectible Value: Smaller editions often have higher collectible value due to their rarity, making them valuable investments for collectors.

Jargon & types

There are a lot of different types of print art and the jargon doens’t make it easy. Here are the definitions you should know:

  • Artist’s Proof (AP): These prints are outside the edition, reserved for the artist to check print quality before the full edition is printed. AP’s are often more valuable due to their rarity (max. 10% of the edition) and usually stay within the artist’s network.
  • Épreuve d’Artiste (EA): The French term for Artist’s Proof.
  • Printer’s Proof (PP): Similar to AP’s but reserved for the printer to check the print quality.
  • Open Edition (OE): Unlike Limited Editions, Open Editions are not limited in number and are not numbered. These are not included in The W Collection due to their low investment potential.
  • Timed Edition (TE): Unlike traditional limited editions with a set number of prints, timed editions produce prints based on demand during a set period.
