James Seow
James Seow was born in Malaysia and has lived in the United Kingdom since the late 1990s. In 2014, he earned a Master of Arts in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art, where he developed work across various media and techniques, including printmaking, photography, sculpture, and installation. He explores connections between traditional Eastern art and contemporary art, using digital techniques and modern visual language to investigate these links.
The relationship between nature and urban life is a key focus in Seow’s work, inspired by his early life experiences witnessing Malaysia’s massive deforestation and urban development in the 1990s. Seow examines how ideals of universal equality and harmony can be communicated, often using the imagery of parks and gardens to illustrate the tension between constructed environments and the transience of the natural world. By working with the interplay between the natural and the artificial, the rational and the instinctive, he encourages a critical rethinking of contemporary reality.
Seow’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in various private collections, including Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, Royal College of Art, Brookfield Asset Management Inc., and St James, Berkeley Group, UK.
